Welcome to UsabiliTree ("we", "us", or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our website at usabilitree.com.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

• Your email address
• Your password (see Section 6 for how it is stored securely)
• Your profile avatar (randomly assigned or via OAuth provider)

OAuth Providers

If you sign in via Google or Discord, we receive:

• Your email address and public profile information provided by those services

Study Data

Any tree tests, tasks, participant results, and related content you create are stored and associated with your account.

Usage Data

We use PostHog to collect usage analytics, including page views, feature interactions, and session recordings. Analytics are collected automatically to help us understand how the service is used and improve it over time.

When you are signed in, analytics events are associated with your account (including your email address) so we can understand authenticated user behaviour. This includes checkout and purchase-completion events used to understand who purchased paid study packs. Before signing in, analytics are collected anonymously with no account linkage.

Error Monitoring

We use Sentry to capture application errors. Error reports may include browser type, OS, and anonymised stack traces.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• Provide and maintain the UsabiliTree service
• Send transactional emails (e.g., email verification, password reset)
• Process payments via our payment provider, Creem
• Improve and debug the service

3. Payments

Payments are processed by Creem (creem.io), our Merchant of Record. When you make a purchase, Creem acts as the legal seller and handles payment processing, tax compliance, and receipts. We do not store your payment card details. Please review Creem's Privacy Policy for details on how they handle payment data.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share data only with:

• Creem – for payment processing
• PostHog – for product analytics, including account-linked analytics for signed-in users
• Sentry – for error monitoring
• Turso – our database provider (data is stored on their infrastructure)

All third-party providers are contractually required to protect your data.

5. Data Retention

We retain your account and study data for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account at any time from the Settings page, which will permanently remove your data.

6. Security

We use industry-standard security practices including:

• Password hashing: Your password is hashed using bcrypt before storage — your plain-text password is never saved or accessible to us
• HTTPS for all data in transit
• HTTP-only session cookies

Despite our best efforts, no system is completely secure. Please use a strong, unique password.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Delete your account and associated data
• Object to certain processing

8. Cookies

We use the following cookies:

• Session cookie: An HTTP-only cookie used to keep you authenticated. This is strictly necessary for the service to function.
• Analytics cookies: PostHog sets cookies (prefixed ph_) to support usage analytics and session recording. These are not advertising cookies and are not shared with ad networks.

We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

9. Children's Privacy

UsabiliTree is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance.
